ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR

Amy Lin

Amy Lin’s training in the Wong Shun Leung method of Ving Tsun began at the Melbourne Chinese Martial Arts Club in July 2010 under the instruction of Sifu Darren Elvey and Sifu David Peterson.

She continued to train under the sole direction of Sifu Darren Elvey after the school was renamed Ving Tsun Combat Science in 2011.

Amy is not tall. Most of her training family are bigger and stronger than her and she learned early as a female practitioner that she could not win using strength over a male opponent. These limitations have allowed her to readily test the effectiveness of the Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun system to deal with bodies larger and more powerful than herself.

It became clear that the system’s fundamental ideas of not facing force with force, using a structure supported by the ground and taking the simplest, most direct and most efficient action were imperative to building a set of skills that would maximise her ability to effectively defend herself.

Amy began assisting to coach other students in June 2014. In August 2016, she successfully received accreditation through the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme administered by the Australian Sports Commission via Kung Fu Wushu Australia.

Amy says that, ‘the conceptual framework underpinning the Wong Shun Leung method provides a platform to research, analyse and test the effectiveness of one’s structure and actions. The strength of the teaching at Ving Tsun Combat Science is in this scientific approach. The result is a methodology which is not rote and responses which are not prescribed. Instead, one develops a kinaesthetic, physiological and spatial awareness which becomes the basis of one’s own mastery of the system, one’s own ‘kung fu’.’

Amy reflects that, ‘you shape yourself to be the keys to open your doors. Along the way, your kung fu training family are here to help.’ Amy is grateful to Sifu Darren Elvey’s teaching and coaching and the guidance of her kung fu brothers and sisters whose generosity and openness have helped her develop her skills. Amy takes privilege in sharing her knowledge of the Wong Shun Leung method of Ving Tsun with you.
